Double Feature: MFA Thesis Exhibition

  • Icebox Project Space (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Double Feature is just that—two successive exhibitions that use the same space and framework. In April and May, the Weitzman School at the University of Pennsylvania will open the thesis exhibitions for the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 in the MFA program in the Department of Fine Arts. The exhibitions will be installed at the Icebox Project Space at the Crane Arts building at 1400 North American Street in Philadelphia. The Class of 2020 will be on view from April 25 through May 7 and the class of 2021 will be on view May 14 through 27.

The program follows the same premise as a double-bill: each exhibition is a unique and independent presentation, shown back-to-back. In a year without movie theaters, the title felt appropriate.

Class of 2021:
Zoe Penina Baker, Viola Bordon, Won Cha, Anthony Filipelli, Julian Harper, Narendra Haynes, Kay Seohyung Lee, Nathan Xiaoxiang Li, Illya Mousavijad, Arely Peña, Em Rea, Amrita Stützle, and Patricia Renee' Thomas

Exhibition Curator:
Yuri Stone is a curator based in Washington, D.C. He is the Assistant Curator at Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland where he works with artists to realize exhibitions, publications, and long-term outdoor installations.

Heschel in the Park

What is our relationship with work and with rest? What does it mean to make holy? How do we live in the world exactly as it is, without anticipating change in order to be at ease? Abraham Joshua Heschel's The Sabbath, one of the most influential pieces of modern Jewish philosophy, is a beautiful and extraordinary contemplation of these questions and more.

In the spirit of the book, we'll take it slowly and luxuriously - reading with our whole bodies, stopping and starting as we please, and letting the experience of contemplating the text be a part of the texture of the day. We'll have plenty of blankets and snacks but feel free to bring more so that our cup overflows even more. Selections from the book will be provided, and discussion and reflection will be facilitated by David Louis and Zoe Penina Baker - no reading ahead of time necessary.
